Moving in together and separating often change your household before your insurance administration changes. A policy in one name may insure several people, but this depends on the definitions of partner, family and home address. Conversely, marriage does not automatically make someone co-insured under every existing policy. Therefore start with the actual move and individual policies. This guide helps organise cover, changes and evidence carefully. Agreements between partners and processing by an insurer are different steps; check both before cancelling insurance.

1. Prepare an overview per person and policy

Collect policy schedules and terms for contents, buildings, liability, legal expenses, travel, car, health and life insurance, among others. Record who is policyholder, who is defined as insured and which address receives messages. The policyholder is the contracting party but need not be the only insured person. Also record who pays premiums and can report changes. Safely keep your own relevant documents without using someone else’s personal account without permission.

Make a second overview of the intended situation after cohabitation or departure. Include move dates, key handover, addresses and children’s living arrangements. One relationship end date does not always describe when possessions moved or someone began living elsewhere. Separating these moments lets you ask the insurer specific questions. Ask for each policy from which date adjustment is needed and whether a temporary transition situation falls under existing cover.

2. Read the definition of partner and family

Check whether the policy refers to living together as a family, registration at the same address, marriage or another condition. A housemate is not necessarily a partner, and a partner living elsewhere is not necessarily co-insured. Definitions may differ by product, even within one insurance package. Therefore do not merely report a change of marital status; describe the actual living situation.

Kifid decision 2024-1140 shows why notification must be demonstrable. In a complaint against an intermediary, it was not proved that the changed address and family circumstances had been reported. That particular decision does not mean every incorrect registration always produces the same outcome. It does clarify that paying premiums afterwards does not automatically resolve an earlier coverage problem. Keep the original notification, acknowledgement and amended policy schedule and check the change reached the correct party.

3. Do not blindly combine policies when moving in together

Two similar policies do not automatically mean one immediately becomes unnecessary. First compare insured people, amounts, deductible, exclusions, ongoing claims and applicable terms. For legal expenses insurance, also examine when a problem arose. An existing issue may fall outside new insurance cover. Therefore discuss before cancellation what happens to a reported loss or dispute and who continues handling it. Compare the confirmed end date with the commencement of replacement cover.

For combined household contents, check that the insured amount and special limits still fit all possessions. A move may also involve temporary storage, transport or two home addresses. Request focused confirmation; one insurer’s moving cover is not a universal rule. Also record which possessions remain yours and which were bought jointly. The same overview then helps with a later claim without having to rely solely on recollection afterwards.

4. Arrange both addresses and the children when separating

The departing person must know when their possessions and personal liability become insured elsewhere. The person remaining must check whether policyholder, family composition and payment details can be adjusted. Do not terminate the joint policy before replacement cover and any required consent are arranged. For a jointly owned home not yet sold, ownership, actual use and policy terms may diverge. Report vacancy or changed use if the terms require it and ask what this means for home insurance.

For children, a reference to shared parenting is often too general. Ask how residence at two addresses, studying away from home, age and travel with each parent are treated. Liability, legal expenses, travel and health insurance do not necessarily define an insured child identically. An arrangement with one parent therefore gives no certainty about all risks with the other without investigation. Obtain written confirmation of which children are insured on which policy and prevent unintended cancellation because each parent assumes the other is arranging it.

5. Handle the car and claim-free years separately

Check who holds the vehicle registration, who mainly uses the car and whose name the insurance is in. An agreement between you allocating the car does not automatically change the policy. If one partner’s insurance ends, necessary replacement cover must be arranged in time. Ask the insurer how transfer of the car and change of regular driver are processed. Use factual details in applications and do not copy an earlier registration if the situation has changed.

Also discuss accumulated claim-free years. These are not automatically divided between former partners because both drove or paid premiums. According to Kifid, transfer or division can be requested in certain situations; contact the insurer for this. Ask which declarations, consent and conditions are required and what each party can use afterwards. Include an agreement in the financial settlement but also check final processing on the policy and registration.

6. Check health insurance and beneficiary designations separately

Joint health insurance requires its own administrative handling. Ask the health insurer how a co-insured person obtains a separate policy, when it starts and who pays ongoing premiums or the deductible. Menzis, for example, describes a specific procedure and commencement date; other insurers may organise processing differently. Do not infer a mid-year right to switch solely from separation. Also check where children are registered and whether supplementary reimbursements remain available in the new situation.

Life and term life insurance additionally involve policyholder status, insured person, beneficiary designation and possible pledging. Do not assume a former partner named as beneficiary is automatically replaced by the relationship breakdown. Ask the insurer which change is necessary and possible. A mortgage, accepted beneficiary designation or division agreement may require further assessment. Before surrender or transfer, investigate legal and tax consequences. Merely changing the premium direct debit does not answer these questions and may cause a necessary payment to be incorrectly aligned later.

7. Confirm changes and resolve a coverage conflict specifically

Send changes with policy numbers, people concerned and desired commencement dates to the designated insurer or adviser. Request confirmation and then check the amended schedule for names, addresses, insured amounts and family composition. A correspondence address change need not be processed like a new risk address or expansion of the insured group. Immediately report an error in writing.

If a post-loss dispute arises over whether someone remained insured, collect the applicable policy, move chronology and earlier notifications. Ask which precise definition and date support rejection. Separately investigate whether timely instructions were incorrectly processed and by which party. Discuss an internal complaint followed by a possible Kifid procedure or lawsuit with an expert where the interest warrants it. A dispute between former partners may additionally need its own route separate from the insurance claim.

Frequently asked questions

Am I automatically co-insured by moving in together?

That depends on the policy and definition of insured people. Check each policy separately and have family composition demonstrably adjusted.

Is my child insured everywhere under shared parenting?

Shared parenting alone does not establish this. Ask for each policy which conditions govern residence, registration, age and travel with both parents.

Does my ex automatically cease to be beneficiary?

Do not assume so. Have the beneficiary designation and any rights of a bank or others involved checked and ask which change is needed.
